The main character has a good sense of humor and is a believable mature woman. The situations she and her friends get into are humorous if not laughable at times. I enjoyed the book. The book hits the ground running and keeps on entertaining you right up until the end. Even though there are quite a few characters in the book, it isn't hard to keep up with who's who. I would recommend this book.

Playing with Poison A Humorous and Romantic Cozy Cue Ball Mysteries Book 1 edition by Cindy Blackburn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Jessie Hewitt is an award winning historical romance writer. She's had a bit of writer's block, so in attempt to overcome this block, she goes puts on a newly purchased royal blue bra. A knock at her door, and in stumbles her neighbors fiance. He makes it to her couch and dies.

The story goes on with the many attempts at finding out who had poisoned the fiance. There are many suspects, including Jessie's own ex-husband and his new wife. The detective makes many requests of Jessie to leave the investigation to he and his colleagues, but Jessie refuses to rest until she finds out who the real killer is.

Despite the story line being about a murder, the book is full of humorous situations. It's an easy read and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see how Jessie and her new detective friend, Wilson Rye, are getting along.
I was expecting a fun, light-hearted romp of a murder mystery, but what I actually got was much more than that! I got to meet some wonderful characters, and not simply the main character and her friends and associates! She is a romance writer, and I got to meet the characters SHE was writing about, as well! Her life is just going along like normal, when her downstairs neighbor's fiance shows up at her door and dies on her couch! Add a suspicious homicide detective who believes she was fooling around with the dead guy, and her manic, writer's imagination, and just watch the sparks fly!
This book is very much character-driven, and there are some wonderful characters here to drive the story! If you have ever enjoyed a steamy, sexy bodice-ripper romance novel, you'll probably enjoy the main character's works in progress. If you've ever enjoyed a cozy murder mystery, you'll probably enjoy the main character's nosy introduction to crime-solving. This book was simply VERY enjoyable! I loved it, on several different levels!
Jessica Hewitt, a writer, has an acquaintance die from poisoning while sitting on her sofa. Jessica is determined to find the killer. She lives in an apartment building with some characters. Could one of them have done this? The writing is good, however there are some spelling and grammatical errors. Included is fluff of the book Jessica is currently writing. The characters are well portrayed becoming easy to identify and sympathize with. I enjoyed reading this book.
This book was sooo funny! It had me laughing hard right from the start.

It starts out with her friend's fiance coming to her condo and dying on her couch. Of course, since it happened in her home, she is the prime suspect. She didn't kill the man so she wanted to find out who did. She soon learned that the man wasn't well liked so the list of suspects was long.

I really liked Jessie. She was a 52-year-old historical romance writer who wore some unusual clothes at times because she worked from home and was alone most of the time. When someone did come to the door and she was wearing a blue bra and white shirt, it was a problem. Due to the investigation, this did happen to her. Jessie was a pool shark who put herself through college playing pool. This skill came in handy when she was investigating. I loved her relationship with Capt. Wilson Rye. They were often annoyed with each other, making their attraction something they didn't want to focus on.

The quirky characters add to the humor in this book. Most of them are likable but some are not. They all help the story along making it funny, somewhat romantic and a good mystery.
A novelist, who is past child bearing age and divorced, enters her apartment to find a man lying on her couch trying to gasp out a name before he dies. She becomes involved in solving this mystery and ropes in her friends who live in the same apartment block. This is a very light novel which is amusing but somewhat unrealistic as far as the roles played by the characters in it. There are some typographical errors.
I thoroughly enjoyed Playing with Poison. What a wonderful debut! Jessie Hewitt, protagonist, historical romance writer, and pool shark, is a delight. She is funny, smart and very loyal to her friends. Jessie is in the middle of working on her latest book when she answers a knock on her door. Her neighbor's fiancé, Stanley, stumbles in, collapses on her couch, and dies. So begins a really fun read. Naturally, Jessie immediately becomes a `person of interest' so she feels compelled to investigate. Eventually, Candy (friendly neighbor, lingerie seller, and Stanley's fiancée), is arrested for the murder. Jessie is convinced she is innocent and sets out to prove it.

Ms. Blackburn has written a very engaging story. She has filled her book with a great group of characters. Since most of these characters have a good reason for wanting Stanley dead, it isn't easy to figure out the identity of the culprit. I was hooked before I finished reading the first page--actually, it was the first sentence that pulled me in. Being of a certain age, or as Candy puts it, old, that sentence had me nodding my head and chuckling. Throughout the book, Jessie gives us a sneak peek into her work-in-progress, which enhanced the story and made me laugh. This is a well-written story with humor, believable dialogue, extremely likeable characters, and just the right amount of romance--everything I love in a story!

I've just downloaded the next two books in this series Double Shot and Three Odd Balls. Looking forward to reading them. Can't wait to see what Ms. Blackburn has in store for Jessie and her friends. Happy reading!
The main character has a good sense of humor and is a believable mature woman. The situations she and her friends get into are humorous if not laughable at times. I enjoyed the book.
